NPP makes history again!

The New Patriotic Party will once again seek to cement its credentials as the most democratic party in Ghana and indeed in Africa when it holds primaries in 220 constituencies to elect parliamentary candidates across the length and breadth of the country Saturday.

In a repeat of its historic Presidential Primary which saw over 107,000 delegates voting to elect its Presidential Candidate, over 123,000 delegates will, tomorrow, embark on a similar journey to elect the party’s parliamentary candidates for the 2012 general elections.

In the view of many, the rancour that characterised the NPP’s parliamentary primaries in 2008 cost the party dearly in the 2008 elections resulting in the defeat of the NPP. The NPP lost a total of 31 seats whilst gaining 10 new seats representing a net loss of 21 seats.

The reforms introduced into the party, via the constitutional amendments of 2009, after the 2008 elections proved popular within the party because the party recognized that a process of greater inclusion will strengthen the party’s capacity to mobilise the people behind its programme.
